Terrain Sculpting & Orthophoto Aerial Imagery Guide

In real-world flight simulation, the quality of the earth beneath your aircraft defines the visual experience. World Builder Pro combines terrain mesh sculpting and aerial orthophoto management into an interactive, visual workflow.

1. Terrain Mesh Sculpting & Elevation Brush

Default simulation meshes often leave airport boundaries jagged, with runways cutting unnaturally into hillside terraces. In the Terrain layer, select the Elevation Brush to manipulate vertex heights interactively:

  • Smooth Tool: Soften steep mesh cliffs around airport perimeters for natural terrain transitions.
  • Flatten Tool: Establish clean, uniform elevation planes across airport ramp operational areas.
  • Slope Tool: Draw a vector line across a sloped runway to enforce a smooth, continuous longitudinal gradient matching real-world charts.

2. Ingesting Aerial Orthophotos

World Builder Pro supports bringing your own aerial photographic sources. You can import local high-resolution GeoTIFF files or connect supported imagery tile providers using your personal API keys.

Once ingested, imagery tiles are automatically reprojected, aligned to the underlying elevation mesh, and sliced into X-Plane’s native 1-degree DSF tile boundaries.

3. Seasonal Texture Calibration

X-Plane 12 features a dynamic 4-season climate engine. World Builder’s Seasonal Look Editor lets you preview how your orthophotos appear in Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Snow conditions.

Apply non-destructive color balancing and desaturation curves to generate matching seasonal variants, ensuring your scenery blends seamlessly into surrounding default terrain regardless of the month you fly.
